Poor mans Project 1979 CX500" Reserection"

The time has come for me to post a project !!!

This is something new for me. I have never been much of a picture taker.

One common theme with projects and I quote "Its just become too much for me so I am selling it please take it away" .

Another quote "I didn't know how expensive it was going to be"

Goal to do a driveway build with tools that most hobbyists should have can rent or borrow.

So I went and got the cheapest nastiest CX500 on Craigslist a 1979 Standard Plastic Maggot .

I am going to count every dollar spent and an approximation of hours to complete.

Some may say: You can't count gas or insurance or license ,to those I say if its out of pocket it counts,

if it came with the bike and its sold it is a credit . Basic TCI :total cost involved . KIR:keep it real !!

Spare parts that are in stock will be assigned a fair market value.

I will not give a running total those who follow can add as well or better than I can .

Definition of complete: clean safe roadworthy well maintained and fits my personal needs and likes

and resembles the low budget builds that are inspiration for Cafe Racers all over the planet . Less is more.

Went to Clovis Ca. to look at the bike made toe deal paid $125 had to put in an extra $35 saved about $12 by combining

a trip to Bakersfield ,ordered a set of Harley mufflers from ebay the best price found $27.50 free shipping.

rattle bombs from local hardware store on sale $ 12 .Name: 00r0r_1Qjw4H9fPnw_600x450.jpg

This is what I got to start with. Sat under a tree for at least 14 years.

More to come........ hope this will inspire someone to bring a bike back to life.

Don't junk them save them....the sad reality is some will give their parts so others may live .

Pix cover most of what has happened to this point.

Tried to crank the engine with starter jumped directly to post nothing but sparks.

Removed cleaned lubed and tested O.K. so re installed . Tried again still no crank.

Pulled off down pipes tried to squirt PB blaster(penetrating lube) into exhaust ports valves were closed

GOOD for me no moisture can get in that way.

Removed boots between carbs. and air box, separated manifolds from heads spray PB blaster

onto cylinder thru open valves, removed front access plug.

Tried to turn the engine, barley moved. Came back next day and persuaded the engine to turn,

after turning a few times it was free. Checked oil, cranked with starter and checked for spark... none.

Installed a known good C.D.I. checked for spark bright blue with a snapping sound.

Squirted a little gas in the intake ports gave it a crank and it hit on both cylinders,

about 5 times each, now i am confident to go forward with mods repairs and maintenance.

Started sanding the tank, tearing down the seat for mods, and removed tail piece cut the fender off,

cleaned the tail light inside and out, sanded and painted as needed.

When down pipes were removed the power chamber fell apart, cans have long ago parted company with

    the rest of the system.

Have a pair of down pipes in stock assigned a value for the pair of $40.

The harley mufflers arrived look better than I thought they would.Name: Picture 006.jpg

Haven't decided exactly what to do with intake and exhaust.

May use stock carbs with power chamber,or maybe some race flat slides

that I bought to experiment with.

Would like to get more performance and loose some weight.

Weigh at certified scale when done.

    thats all folks..... for now

My first GL500 was a badly-neglected Interstate that had literally caught on fire taking out a large chunk of wiring harness. It had sat outside for years at a shop and was being used for parts. It was missing the voltage regulator, ignitors, starter and as mentioned, the section of harness. The fork springs were shot too. Did come with the side cases though and for $225 it was mine. I sourced the missing parts on eBay, pouncing on the auctions where nobody else was bidding. Had to buy the tires and Progressive fork springs new. Had it all back together and running for a total investment of $550, not including the manual I bought. I created the harness out of wiring I had salvaged from cars over the years and made the connector blocks using dams and filing with JB Weld.

I was in the middle of getting a degree and working for minimum wage at the university so I had to really work for it. I got the cheapest tires I could get online and only splurged on the fork springs because I had to so the bike would be safe to ride. It's a challenge, but if you can pull it off, it is rewarding. The best part is realizing that you are having about as much fun riding it as the guy that bought a $20k bike.

Probably more so since you know what went into making it ride-able again.

we are all given sh*t in life, but some of us learn to turn it into fertilizer and grow from it, and some us try to fling it on others like monkeys.

Went digging thru the piles of spares found a decent power chamber (H-[box) it is solid with 1 dent very solid value

of $50 will be assigned based on e bay sales.

Pulled off the choke, throttle and clutch cables lubed them, choke cable is fine clutch cable is still locked up and questionable,

one throttle cable is rusted in half the other seems to be savable maybe.

Looks like another dive into the spares to see whats there.

Cut the seat pan to the width of the frame, don't like how high it sits in rear will be cutting off the cross member and

taking the bike up to an old friends house he has every kind of welder and is a great fab man does beautiful work,

will be making the minor change to rear frame and have an idea for mod to h-box to run a single can.

Less weight and a different look hopefully retaining stock performance.

Cleaned the carbs soaked for days using progressively aggressive solutions, resisted urge to over clean the outside.

No polishing or paint leaving most of the patina trying not to ruin the look of a saved from certain death machine.

Trying to preserve personality rather than making a paint and powder show off machine.

It takes some discipline to resist scrubbing ,polishing, sanding, and painting everything nice and pretty.

    Will post more pix soon.

    Thanks for stopping by

    Corey

P.S. A full disassemble and beautification may be in the future but thats another chapter maybe.
