    Tyler's CX500 Build

I rescued a rotting CX500 Deluxe from my Father-in-law's backyard. I have been researching other builds and have begun to collect parts for mine - now is as good of a time as any to introduce my first build.

The tank is rusted beyond repair, the carbs are in bad shape, and a mouse has made a meal out of a few of the parts.

Thanks to Murray and Phil Brewer I have some replacements.

1996 CBR900RR front end on ebay $150. Seemed like a deal so it is now on its way. I also ordered the bearings from All Balls.

I needed a wheel so I went to L&L Cycle in Dallas, to rummage through their graveyard. This place is unreal, check out this video tour.

At L&L, I found a 1996 VFR750 and remember reading someone say the 17in wheel that should be a direct bolt on. Im hoping the rotors and wheel work with the CBR900RR front I have coming.

Here is how it sits right now...

I ordered a set of 12.5" Motorcycle Pair Air Shock Absorbers, as well. Next I need to determine the tire size for the front wheel and start researching exhaust.

The front end just arrived. I was able to mount the wheel/ brake calipers and it appears to be a fit!

Does anyone see something I do not? I rolled it around and the only thing I saw or heard (that was not ideal), was the sound of the pads on the rotor - which doesn't seem like a big deal at this point... as I still need to tune everything up. From what I can tell, the '96 CBR900RR front end and the '96 VFR750 wheel match up. Take a look. Let me know if devastation is lurking around the corner.

Also, what size tire options do you think are possible? Right now there is a 120/70 - 17. I plan on keeping the stock back 16 inch wheel and would like to do right by the front / back tire combination.

I spent the last couple weeks researching and ordering parts. Here is what I have coming in:

    - Shinko Tires (SR777 120/90-17 and 130/90-16 Rear)
    - Ignitech (thanks Cobram)
    - All Balls: New Fork Seals + Wheel, Steering, and Front End Conversion Bearings
    - Exhaust / Baffles (inspiration from Ceehexed's Commuter Cafe) I may change later, but this is a good solution for now

Needless to say we were unable to get the bike to start... I just ordered a couple coils (Ignition Coil Yamaha ATV Badger 80 YFM80 New 1989 2001 | eBay). Does anyone have a good link for the brass rod mod? Should I get new caps for the iridium NGK spark plugs?

***WARNING*** THE IMAGES YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE ARE REFLECTIVE OF GHETTO TECHNIQUES. THE INTENT IS TO GET BIKE RUNNING AND THEN MAKE IT PRETTY. SLACK MUST BE GIVEN TO MEMBER SHOULD YOU PROCEED ANY FURTHER. ***WARNING***

Replaced the coils with some baggers.

Completed the brass rod mod on stock spark plug caps. I was unable to get a spark. Alexy and I spent a couple hours diagnosing possible problems. In the midst, I decided to install new Ignitech. Originally, I was going to try to get this thing to start with as many stock parts as possible but I was getting frustrated being unable to find source.

Finally I took a multimeter up and down the bike... it appears the caps are the problem - so I replaced them with some new ones for now.

Successful spark. I put together a makeshift fuel tank...

...and voilą!! First start in 10+ years.

Now I need to figure out what I did incorrectly during the carb install (see below - fuel is leaking out of one of the hoses on each)

the answer is not the float level so dont strip the carbs yet and not without instruction they not a common float carb and

removing the float tang is not that simple

i ran the carbs before they left here on the same model bike and the angles were the same

    i had no leaks

but this has occurred before so if the box was not bashed up and the carbs jarred badly and you would see it in the shipping box

you have installed them correctly so no issue there

so some how there is something gotten in the carbs

close the fuel supply off loosen the 17mm drain plug on the bottom of the carb

place a rag or container under the carb one at a time and remove the drain plug

open the fuel to let some fuel flow freely and hopefully flush the needle and seat out

replace the plug on that carb and snug the drain it is a oring seal not by tightness so dont crank it to much

    repeat with the other carb

also look in the rag and the cap to see if you can see and dirt or specs

if this does not cure the problem call me when you have a few minutes tomorrow morning and we will fix it
