    Vetje's CX500 Custom build

Well shit, I typed a pretty lengthy intro but it disappeared.

Long story short: Dutch guy, looking for first bike project ever, fell in love with the CX, found this great forum, got the bike for a couple of months already. Not a lot of time like everyone so progress is slow. Loving the project to death, always looking for tips and comments.

Further explanation will come as I am tired right now and a little pissed my intro vanished. But there are photos of the beginning to where I roughly am now and my little brother making sweet love to the sandblaster.

Thanks! I was half way reading up your build before the weekend. Wish I finished it earlier because then I would have seen that neat solution for keeping the factory edge on my front fender. I just made the cut this weekend, ah well. I will keep a close eye on yours as well!

Thanks, for now its all fun, breaking down part is easy. I'm already starting to sweat a little when I think of reassembling it though.. made lots of pictures and labelled nearly everything so I should be ok.

The design has changed many, many times by now. Still not certain about the steering but it is going to be more cafe than anything else. Got the frame to a welder and requested a hoop on the end and talked about the weird ass angles of the CX and he said he could do a little more than just the hoop to shorten and straighten the frame end, will post pictures next week. I am very exited about seeing the result.

colourwise I fell in love with the bare metal of the tank when I stripped it. There are going to be some bare metal components (I got this idea for the radiator and tubes being all naked metal) and the block will most likely be painted black. Although I saw some builds with the cast iron grey which looked awesome so I might trade my black VMT paint for the iron cast grey before painting (getting close to painting btw). Also some red accents, maybe the oil filter and some red Honda badges.

Not sure about the seat, I am going to try and make one myself. Depends a bit on how my welder did and maybe he can help me with the bottom plate for the seat. I also want to weld my own battery box (never welded before but the box will be hidden under the frame and so will my incompetence to weld so to say).

I had caught the flu on thursday and still wasn't feeling well enough to make the trip to my bike unfortunately..

I have got a sneak peek of the modification on the frame though:

This friday I am going to get cracking again. Figuring out what to do with the seat and so on.

Due to the flu and some social responsibilities I have sadly mist some weeks of work on the CX. But, I have a nice update for the new year. I have finally gotten to the painting of the block and some other parts.

I needed a space to paint and because the place I am working in has a couple of cars in it, I wanted to set up some sort of tent including a heater of some kind (it is getting pretty cold here for painting). I found out that raising the car lift would work perfect with the in built lighting and space.

I'm very happy with the way the paint came out, I did miss a very small spot on the engine block but I think I can put on a small layer after seven days.

    To be continued.

Finally another day of working on the CX. Saw I still missed some spots of paint when the sun was on the block. Dit some touch ups and started on the foam I got from my metal guy to create the ass.

Also decided I am going to paint the wheels. Lot of people said I shouldn't because they already were black and metal (which suits the bike) but I did'nt like the look of it.

I did not make a lot of pictures but one is while I am in the shaping process of the ass and the other is the bike that this guy that is helping me made.. from scratch (8 years old already). Designed and built the entire frame, aluminum tank, steering, everything. He offered me to take a lesson in his shop to learn the basics of welding and fabcricating the ass of the bike of my foam design (which isn't finished yet). Looking forward to it.

I still have to order a lot of gaskets, steering wheel and accessories, pipes and so on. Going to get on that. December and januari are expensive months.

That's a pretty creative workbench! Pallets and jack stands. Not seen anything like that before. Is it stable?

Haha that's more of my "project space" than my workbench but it works pretty decent! Although as you can see sometimes someone needs a jack and replaces it with some wood.

You can see the workbench I use in the third picture of my first post. It is not my workbench but I can use it. Since I live in Amsterdam and have no space what so ever I have made the arrangement that I can store my stuff there en and use the bench/tools etc.

A small update from this weekend. Got to paint the oil filter and tank cap (was doubting wether or not to paint them at all) and spend some time sanding my design for the rearend. I'ts done for 80% but it's going to be a little thinner and sleeker and there will be two slight indents in the sides. Although I yet have to see how much of that is being translated into the metal I will shape it in. Looking forward to the day I am going to learn the basics of welding and shaping metal.

I love the look of the red and black. Probably going to paint the "Honda" letters on the clutch case red as well. I see it's kinda looks orange in the photo, maybe the lighting is off.
