    Cool My first bike build and its a GL500

    Hello all! I am new at this, meaning the bike building and this forum. I came across a really cheap GL500 and began work on my Café Racer efforts about a month ago.
    I have the thing all down into small piles It's amazing how small the bike looks laying in piles on the floor and the engine up on the bench. The bike is not in the best of shape and I don't have a lot of money nor experience. Sounds like I am doooooooomed anyways I am so happy to find this forum! I will try to get some pics up soon. I am kind of stuck at the moment. I don't want to break open the engine but I am not sure it runs. It will turn over with east but not sure it will run. I am planning on cleaning the engine painting it by this weekend and then moving on to the frame work. The problem I have right now on the engine is that the intake boots are cracked and I bought some off of ebay at a really good price... but ... lack of experience when I opened the box they were awesome. I took them to the barn and held them up the my GL500... no ... no ... what? Why? they are different, but how? OH they are for a CX500 and not a GL500. My fault, I thought they were the same. te he. So I looked at my carburetor rebuild kit and I think its for a cx500 and not GL500 not sure about that yet. Not sure if the carbs are the same just wider apart. So I have been looking on Ebay for GL500 intakes and not finding anything. If I had more money I would consider buying a used set of cx500 carbs to go with my new cx500 intakes.?

    Does anyone know how I can start my engine on the bench so that I don't have to do a lot of work just to pull it back out and replace something like the cam tensioner?

    Should I even try to use the stock carbs and stock intakes? What do you guys think about my mess I am in? Any suggestions... oh and I am VERY excited to be part of this forum and hope to meet some of you guys someday.

    Welcome to the forum.
    Update your profile and signature to display your location and year/model bike.
    Buy some Murray's carbs and all your intake/carb problems will go away.

    Hind sight is always 20/20. Would have been better to get it running before you spent time and money tearing apart an unknown specimen. What year is your GL? buy one of the two carb books in my sig line, also down load the FSM there too

    How much are they? Where can I buy these said carbs?
    Do they come with the intakes as well?

    Message him ( MurrayF ) for details. He does have custom made intakes for them. The Mikuni's he puts together are pretty much plug and play. He has links in his signature line on how to contact him outside the forum.

    putting another $500 carbs (or so) in to a bike that your not even sure runs?? He has or had extra intakes for a stock carb setup last I knew.... Get the bike running first... then spend on goodie IMHO

    You can get an idea of the cam chain life remaining using a mirror and looking through the inspection port:

    A set of CX500 carbs will not fit in a GL500 frame. The CX500 carbs are joined together spaced a bit apart (picture halfway down the page here), the GL500 carbs are joined together more closely due to the differences in frame design (CX fits around the single spine frame, GL fits inbetween the two vertical spars on the outside)

    Was the motor out of the bike when you bought it? Will it turn over by hand? I see above you said it turns over with "east"... typo?
