    Lyt's '82 GL500 Resto

Howdy, folks. I bought an '82 GL500I yesterday for $150. Didn't come with title so if I can't get the antique tags for it (which would kinda surprise me), then I'll just use it for parts for my CX. Here's how she pretty much looked when I bought it.

I've cleaned the carbs already and I'm changing oil as soon as I get a filter. The first hiccup so far is the starter. It was completely seized and was a PITA to disassemble. What do you guys think? Can this thing be saved?

It's junk, and from the looks of it, there's a chance that starter was underwater for a while.....

Very few parts on the GL will fit your CX. Check the rear diff for water infiltration, and the wiring for oxidation/rot too.

I live on a one-way street that's also a dead end. I'm not sure how I got here, or how I'm going to get out.

Thanks, Cobram. I know there's not much that'll transfer over, but if I can get the engine running well that'll be enough for me. Plus I figured I could sell the luggage for close to what I bought the bike for.

Too bad you're so far away - I could use the whole front end. Shipping would be painful though.

I can imagine. If I end up restoring it completely I'll need a fairing. I'm sure shipping on those are almost just as bad.

I got the VIN Inspection done today and everything came back clear. I'm going to attempt to get this bike back out on the road over the next few months. It was missing the starter relay, so I bought an aftermarket version on ebay.

I've seen some topics about these on the forum saying that you have to be careful not to plug it in backwards but I can't find how it's actually done correctly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lyt, I just opened a starter on an 82 custom last week that had been sitting in the weather 10 years or so, seized up like that. But the shaft and bushings were pretty smooth so I sanded the rust off the rotor and out of the stator, greased the bushings and it works ok. Of course the brushes and commutator need to be ok as well. Good luck with it

    Steve,

I'm going to take a stab at cleaning it up. I don't lose anything if I try. Good call on greasing the bushings. Thanks for the advice.

LYT, I wanted to show you how the starter looked and to test my ability to post pics. When I pulled it open out poured a couple spoonfuls or so of powdered oxide of iron and I suppose aluminum. Cheers, Steve
