i used 3m blue tape around the boarder (easy stuff to remove) so i didn't have to clean that part up.. then sprayed the VHT black on. got an old broken vice jaw that was laying around as it was straight and squire raped an old fairly lint free rag around it put a tinny bit of wax and grease remover on it then did two swipes over the letters came out perfect ...........you don't want to much thinners or what ever you are using as it can fall of the rag and run into the paint

oh i did the usual paint prep no sand paper just a good clean with wax & grease remover

You could also use a qtip and put Vaseline or some type of oil base on the things you don't want the paint to stick too.
Sometimes you just can't fix "Stupid!"

You can also paint on a few coats of liquid latex as a mask. But the paint and wipe with a lint free rag dampened with white spirit works well.
