    Tips for painting engine emblems

Any tips on painting my engine emblems. I would like to paint the background black and leave the border and number/letters bare(polished). Any help greatly appreciated.

I cleaned mine with lacquer thinner and removed all the old paint.
I did it the easy way, I sprayed the color and used a small cloth
or Q-tip with thinner to remove the new paint from the raised areas. while the paint was still pretty soft.
I did polish the emblems prior to cleaning and painting. I screwed one up and had to re-do it.
    They look OK to me.

Thank you. Do you need to etch prime or use high temp paint? Wasn't sure if the emblems get hot

I painted mine over two years ago now and they still look fantastic! I used VHT engine paint to paint most of the colors aside from the red.

I made sure they were fully degreased and cleaned, then roughed up the surface with sandpaper lightly. I painted the background red and let it dry, then polished the letters using finer grits of sandpaper, then painted the outside border black and lastly coated the whole thing in a clear coat. Turned out very nice IMO!

Beautiful!! Did you use a brush or spray? Did you bake them?

All done with spray cans and no baking prior to mounting them on the engine. The paint does need to cure at a certain heat I believe, but the heat of the engine is enough to do that, no need to bake in an oven.

I've done the same with mine, using VHT, but I did bake them. Little paint stripper on a q-tip when they're still freshly painted worked wonders.

I removed paint, polished, painted whole emblem, lightly rubbed emblem across a paper towel soaked in thinner on a flat surface to remove overspray from letters and border, cleaned rest of overspray with a q tip and thinner, done.

I painted mine with the same paint I used on the bike. A couple days later I just sanded the paint off the letters / numbers, and border. Left a nice "brushed" finish and have held up well.
