    Painting engine parts.

I have a 82 gl500i that I'm tinkering with. I see that a lot of guys like to paint some of their motor parts a semi gloss black or what not. (Like the head covers for example) I think the 650s may have come already painted up all cool like. That may not be true, but does anyone have any tips for paining motor parts? Do's vs dont's... that kinda thing. I like the looks of the polished aluminum block but black head covers and black exhaust pipes.

    1) The forum's search works pretty well.....

    2) Polishing the block is a lot of work. Most people clean them up pretty good and paint them and then polish things like the rocker covers, clutch cover &c.

    3) The original finish on the 500 engines was metallic silver paint on the main part of the engine with the rocker covers & clutch cover polished & clear coated.
The original finish on the 650s was black on the main part with polished & cleared covers and a black band across the rocker covers. I think the main part may have been powder coated because it is pretty tough stuff.

Whatever you use, etch prime first to make sure the paint sticks to the alloy.
