    fly wheel removal - Would Water Method Work?H

    Hey everyone,

    Here in Minnesota, we have snowmobiles that need clutch work from time to time. On many, the cluch is mounted on a tapered shaft. There is a method of removal called the water method that I am wondering if it would work on the turbo flywheel?


    For a snowmobile clutch, basically, one removes the bolt from the clutch, and then wraps plumbers tape on the bottom of it. You pour water (or some other liquid) down the shaft and screw in the bolt. As you tighten the bolt, the hydrostatic pressure increases. You keep tightening and all of the sudden there is a POP, The clutch is loose.

    If anyone is familiar with the flywheel shaft and arrangement, let me know if you think this would work? See Video below

    I'd just use the M20 x 1.5 mm bolt method.

    I used to use a similar method once to remove the bronze spigot bushes from the back of car crankshafts. The hole in the back of the crank was filled with grease and a dowel that was a tight sliding fit was hammered into the hole.

    Hydraulic pressure forces the bush out .... in theory. The method works but can be hit or miss. Eventually I started tapping them with a thread and dragging them out with a bolt and slide hammer.

    For what its worth, I do not beleive the water method would work here. I got the flywheel off and looking at the construction of it, It is not the same setup on snowmobiles so I believe it will not work. Like CXPHREAK said, I used the bolt method.
