    G'Day From South Australia

I thought I would introduce myself here before I hit you with a barrage of questions.

I am about to take delivery of a 1981 GL 500 Silverwing (and 3 GL 1200 Goldwings) imported from California. The silverwing was never sold here, although the CX was. (My second to last bike was an 'A' model from 1979, so I know a little about them)

Is there anywhere that I can get parts on line who will ship to my corner of the world? Engine parts shouldn't be a problem, there are still a few CX's around, but GL 500 specific stuff could be. I will need a new (or good secondhand) front brake master cylinder, as the one on the bike is badly sun crazed, and looks like it will fall apart with a strong look. did they use the same one on the CX? Was there a difference between the single disk and twin disk brake systems with regards to the master cylinder?

    Thanks

David Silvers in England ship to Oz and have a suitable master cylinder. Be certain to order the 15.8 mm one as that will be compatible with your twin discs.

Are you aware there is an Oz CX forum?

On my CX 500 C I have mounted this one.
Works fine. If you install this you have to have a shorter screw for the connection of the tubes to the MC.

It can get cold and wet here as well...No polar vortex or snow, but cold enough. That is what I have always liked about the CX's- the built in knee-heaters.

I am keeping one of them for me (the 500 is for my better half), so I may need a few.
Two of the 1200's and the 500 run quite nicely, but the third one does have carby problems. The left hand bank appears to be siezed.

I just bought a very nice front M/C off ebay. Here's the listing:

    Front Brake Master Cylinder for Honda CB400 92 93 94 95 96 97 98 Chrome Fit 7 8" | eBay

I know it says free shipping, but that's not to Oz I'm sure. Oh, don't worry that it doesn't list our bike, it works just fine on my 82' GL500i. I'd search out the ebay in Oz searching on some of the key words. Since it was made in China, you might have some luck searching thru Aliexpress. The fit & finish is quite good for Chinese. Here's their front door:

AliExpress.com - Online Shopping for Electronics, Fashion, Home & Garden, Toys & Sports, Automobiles from China.

Search on the CB400 rather than GL500, you'll have much better choices and they are in fact functionally identical. That's what Mike (aka PhotoDoctor) told me and he was quite correct.

BTW, that's a great looking ride! I really like the seat arrangement. Good luck, mate!

Thanks Bob. That is just the sort of info I need. Of course, they didn't sell the CB 400 here either. Our learner laws kept us on 250s for the first year for a long time, and then the boys would all graduate to big stuff. Not a lot of midrange bikes here for the 80's and 90's. That has changed in the last ten years or so, but doesn't help those of us with the rare one from that era. And it does help to make my GL something of a collectors item over here.

Edit: That is a nice cylinder. I may have to see if I can get one sent to someone in the States and posted on.
