So, I've started the work on my CX beyond just taking parts off the frame. I have the engine dropped, and the front cover off, and I've found that it's a good thing I'm doing this -- I've had this bike for 20 years and want to have it for another 20 -- and so far I've found these issues:
1) this little gem was in an oil passage -- http://1drv.ms/1kR7UUZ
2) (and the main reason I pulled the engine) -- I happily found this little nightmare creator -- http://1drv.ms/1kJ24os
3) The oil pump chain has 7mm of play -- twice the spec'd allowance
4) the fan had star formation stress cracks -- let's be serious, i kinda figured on this one -- so e-fan project is going to be on the to-do list.
and that's only the front case
I also took off the stator cover and it looks like this: http://1drv.ms/1kR8i5P and this is the back plate: http://1drv.ms/1iv27pP -- I'd rather not replace it since it was working fine the last time I had the bike running, but, I also have a stronger desire to not pull the motor again, so I guess I'll do that -- figuring on getting one from David Silver -- does the forum have a discount code? (I have been with the forum for a few years, I just have been inactive due to the bike being out of commission for >2 years)
I'm going to get the entire frame stripped and repainted, just need to find a place that I can take it to after it's stripped -- is the consensus still to go with paint over powder coating for rust reasons?
I'm also planning on ordering carbs & pipes from murrayf -- but obviously all major investments will have to wait until i get a look at the frame after its been stripped and to what extent any repairs will need, if any are required.
Now, time for opinion (i figure i know what it'll be, but might as well ask lol), since I've taken the engine apart -- should I just tear it down 100% and clean the case or should i not go that far and just clean it the best i can?
I'm planning on doing all the typical things as well, repacking bearings, cleaning & servicing the brake systems, cleaning and servicing the forks, etc etc, yada yada.
Well, that's a decent start without diving too deep, but i'll be roving the forums looking for advice, and probably asking for advice, thoughts, and opinions.
Oh yeah, I'm hoping to have this done by the 15th of next month, nothing like waiting until the last 10 minutes eh?
