Keep the fender or get rid of it?

Hey guys! I've been getting a ton of work done on my 81 gl500 nicknamed Project Silverhawk. When I got the bike the original owner messed up the stock front fender and chopped half of it off. I had a 1983 Honda shadow I stole the chrome fender from and put on my bike. Now the question is. Do I keep the chrome fender. Eliminate it. Or make something smaller. I would like all the input you guys have. Let the voting begin! Look up at the top of the page there is a poll!

Take it off and then try twisting the bars; watch how much the forks twist before moving the wheel. Put it back on and try again. You want some kind of brace there and the fender is not as stiff as a thicker fork brace but it's better than nothing...

So I vote anything but removing it completely

That's one of the reasons I have kept it JC. But the stock one was plastic! Barely any support. This one is beefier for sure.

The stock plastic fend should have had a metal mounting strut on the bottom to act as a brace.

It did. But the previous owner lost a screw for the fender and it rubbed through the plastic. So they cut it and it looked bad. I sill have it. May chop that as a test piece and see how I like it. Maybe just up and over the tire. 3-4 inches wide.

It all depends on your "toy" to "real bike" ratio. If you only roll it out when there is a drought and all the roads you drive on have perfect pavement and are immaculately clean you don't need a fender. But if there is any chance you might be caught in the rain and/or the roads where you live are littered with bits of gravel and other debris (like the ones most places) you might want to have something that will direct the rain and road crap away from you and the front of the bike.

BTW: I voted "Keep Fender" but only because there wasn't a "Get bigger fender" option.

I understand that some people like smaller fenders but until I retired last spring I drove one of my bikes to work every day so I am a bit biased towards making things practical....

Unfortunately I travel 100 miles a day for work. All expressway. Not something i would do daily on my bike. (I live near Chicago people drive like lunatics) so she's just a toy. Tooling around and occasionally going for an nice cruise.
