The goldwingdocs.com site has a kit for side cover retainers. Might want to check it out

My GL-500i came with a broken long tab on the battery side cover. The tab was hanging by a thread. Someone had tried to repair it with some kind of rubber glue.

I cleaned it up, and repaired it with Permatex Ultra Black Rubber Seal. I use this for many repairs in automotive and around the house. Worked like a charm on my battery cover tab. Ran it all last year, took the battery cover on and off many times with no issues. The tab flexes a very little bit, but holds fast and firm.

    Whatever works, works!

I have had good success with JB weld products, but hadn;t used the plastic welder before. It handled well and repair seems solid but will only know if its fixed after several uses. Surface prep seems to be important for any type of adhesive repairs, clean and some scratches for glue to grab have worked for me, but is only glue, so sometimes it doesn't work due to incompatibility of materials or other issues.

Send it to me and I will fix it so it never comes off. I even have a CX650C in the garage right now so I can test it to make sure everything is perfect. It will cost you $20 and shipping both ways. I have repaired several of this model's covers in the past with no problems. If my repair ever fails I will redo it for free.

Thanx David, the JB weld seems to be holding for now, but ifit comes apart I'll get back to you. Update= got the bag of cheap grommets today and they look nice, have not installed any yet so dont know for sure but they new and soft so covers should stick and stay in there, hopefully,,,

I will be in Middle Amana in June for a BMW rally and could bring the repair kit if you wanted to come to the rally.

I went to that rally several times, from 78 to like 95 or so. Two different Beemers, had fun! I'll keep it in mind, like I say the patch I did feels very solid, I used lots of glue and cleaned it well. I am also careful how i pull on the covers, broken tab or not. Thanx for now!
