Do I need a New CDI Unit? ~ Please Help!

    Dear Friends,

Three weeks ago my motorcycle (1978 CX500) had to go to the doctor (mechanic)
The motorcycle will often run out of battery and the last thing it did was firing and exploding from the right cylinder, it would cough and then it died. I took it the the mechanic and he change the battery and guessed that the problem was on the carbs... after more research he found that there were small amounts of rust particles in the gas tank and he assumed that the problem was rust particles influencing the carbs. So i spent $500 dollars on man power and getting the gas tank coated professionally...

Then on Thursday 03/17 I received the Gas tank from the place where they did the coating and then we put the bike together!! ~ the motorcycle started right away and the mechanic friend took it for a short ride everything was great! ~ I was so happy to finally enjoy my bike after a series of difficulties.

    The problem:
Riding it back home, 15min later, coming back from the mechanic shop, the motorcycle DIED, it just turn off on me on the middle of the road...
The lights (front and speedometer) were on but the ignition button would not do anything!!! DEAD
Then I called the mechanic who came to my rescue... when he got to me 20min later, he tried starting the bike and the bike did start!! but there were explosions and coughing on the right cylinder mainly as before!! ~ then the bike would turn off after a while... I was devastated, I had spent $500 on something other than addressing the issue.
The problem, according to the mechanic, had to do with the electric system and the fact that problems will start once the bike warm up and/or the battery was not being recharged. After trying to start it several times to understand the real issue, at some point the battery ran out.
He did a test on the spot that involved the spark plugs, he will press the starter and at the same time watch the spark plugs spark... we notice that the one on the right was sparking very rapidly and differently from the one on the left.

Now, on our last conversation, He thinks that it has to do with either the spark plug cable or is the actual CDI Unit.
Preparing for the worst, I started my research on this forum about a CDI Units, there was a post about a friend in Sweden that actually makes them. I contacted him but he does not make them any more.

    Help:
Would you please give me your opinion about what is happening with my motorcycle?
If you think that its the CDI Unit, Where can I find one? (a new one)

You guys are a wonderful community and as always I will greatly appreciate your help!

Just in case you have a dirty killswitch problem which can have similar symptoms to yours {bike shuts down, but will restart after a while} try disconnecting the black/white kill wire from the CDI unit and see if the problem persists.

If you do need another CDI unit, Andys Finnbox comes well recommended.

I think Andy in Finnland and the friend in Sweden may in fact be the same person. Andy 62 can be contacted here just in case.

You also have the options of Raesan or ignitech ignitions.

I would like the test figures for the ignition components. Not doubting your mechanic ..... but I kinda doubt mechanics .....

"I think Andy in Finnland and the friend in Sweden may in fact be the same person. Andy 62 can be contacted here just in case."

I do not have any Swedish friend? I have lived whole my life in Finland, I'm Finnish.

Speaking of my FBG47 cdi units. I have designed that cdi unit and made them time to time. But because the question is a hobby time is limited many times. I have a new job and it seems to take all my time so far. To make one cdi unit takes about 4 hours. I just dropped the engine of my own cxc. Spring is coming..

    Regards,

Aki alias Andy62 (Finland, no Sweden )
