Dang!!!! Wore out my 3rd drive train.

Well, its beginnig to look like Santa is gonna stiff me.

I need a new drive train. This is my 3rd with shifting becoming difficult. It refuses to up or down shift over a couple of gears without a double shift then a single counter shift. Ugggghhhhhhhh.

I inspected it over the weekend, it is indeed showing high wear and has incorrect bearings.

So, I'm diggin' thruough the local version of Amazon, Taobao, for drive train parts. I'm in for the following items. Chain breaker, Freewheel tool, 6 & 8 mm loose ball bearings, Shimano 7 speed freewheel, Crankset - 3 speed and a Chain. Total cost about 400 CNY, roughly $62 USD.

Yep, its my main transportation, a bicycle. I've logged nearly 7000 km (4300 miles) in 30 months. Commuting to/from work and around town with short trip excursions. Chewing through drive trains at a high rate. So much dust, grit, grime, wet, conditions with hills and speed takes a toll on the system. I'm on the 2nd rear derailuer. Several sets of tires and numerous flats. I average a flat every 10 days due to the debris on the road. Nails, screws, staples, glass, sticks, thumbtacks...... Bicycle/rider down happens about every 5 months.

How are the sprockets? Worn sprockets can eat up chains because they no longer mesh properly.

    Hi Knute,
I wonder if you can get one of those shaft drives from shimano and planetary hubs to fit your bicycle? A friend of mine got one on his dynamic and loves it , no problem with dirt. Take care Gerard

Randall......each time the entire drive train gets replaced. Rear Freewheel + Front Crankset + Chain.

This time, I need to replace bearings (needs loose balls, has a cartridge type that doesn't fit the hub cup) and rear axle (its bent, friggin' roads) plus need to do the work myself. This is the need for tools, my bike guy is out of business. China Govt reclaimed the land for development. He packed up and folded. I assume he went back to his hometown or went somewhere that I haven't located.

Gerard, I haven't heard of that system. Got any part numbers that I could use for search. Many times, the new stuff, although made in China, isn't available in China. Export/Import laws....

Gerard....I have found that site. They are selling complete bikes. Not available here.

I have not been able to find a refurb kit. Also by looking at the bike frame, there are significant differences. If I did find a kit, then I'd be in for serious frame reconfiguration.

Think I'll stay with the ol' oily, dirty chain system.

Under those conditions, careful not to wear out the power source too!

The power source uses a special type of fuel based on Tsing Tao, rice, chicken and other bits which are said to be edible.

It doesn't take much to run the 56 yo engine. Has a top speed of about 44 km/hr (27 mph).

The power source is self-repairing with the proper fuel..
