In replacing spark plug cables (e.g., along with ignition coils), it looks like the NGK XD05F plug cap will work in lieu of the factory cap - even though it is 120 degree angle rather than 90 degree. Can anyone confirm this - is it long enough to reach the plugs?

Assuming it will work, what does one do for a cover to the spark plug well, short of cannibalizing the old ones. (And that may not even work - they may not want to go over the new ones.) Does anyone sell a flap cover or anything for this purpose - or any ideas to make something that will work - rubber stoppers??

I'm assuming that without some cover, the well will fill up with rain water and cause havoc with the plugs.

You will need the correct Plug caps unless you use Straight ones and fashion a Rain boot.

If you cannot find a US suppler for the original caps several people on this forum have bought from trusted UK suppliers like Wemoto,

    http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/honda/cx_500_a/79-80/

These are,"None Resistor" types so for a CDI engined CX you need to use,"R" rated plugs as per,

There may be new rain boots available but I've never found them so decent 2nd hand or homemade are the way to go.

The drain holes is on the outbound portion of the plug hole, you can see it about 1 1/2 inch below the valve cover.

Any ideas for how to make homemade boots? Gasket material?

If it were me I have an old un-patterned piece of car mat rubber about a 1/4" thick and with a bit of shoe goo(A must have addition to the toolkit.Good for carb boot splits and even temporary rad leaks),

    and a bit of rubber pipe/hose I bet I could make a small inverted hollow top-hat kind-a-thing

I tried the NGK XD05F once upon a time and they do not work.Straight ones do but look funny. Go to Wemoto and bite the bullet. Looks like about $40 for a pair with shipping, give or take a few pennies.

(no new info, just a recommendation)

Thanks, Steve. Replacements for the originals are available from various sources in the UK, some a lot cheaper than Wemoto. But without the boots. Apparently no one sells them.
