My gaiter has split quite badly and is allowing the oil to pour out. So rather than drop the engine to replace it I am looking for a quick fix. I'm thinking inner tube and shoe goo. Any thoughts?

Looks like you need to replace the output shaft oil seal. It is not a hard job and can be done with engine in place - at least that is how I did mine

My bike runs with no gaiter so do not worry about that. Just unbolt the shaft from the output shaft , slide it out of the way , prise out the old seal and gently tap in the new. Re-assembly is a reversal of above.

If you just use inner tube and glue you would allow the swing arm , where the drive shaft fits in , to fill with engine oil. Consequently the engine would run a bit low on oil and could possibly seize. Best case would be the diff unit would piss out oil all over the rear end of bike ( not a good idea )

There should be no motor oil in that rubber boot.

as previously stated, replace the drive-shaft seal.

    Carefully!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sidecar Bob posted this a while back; it might help with the split gaiter after you fix the oil leak. Fib

Quite a few around at varying prices,

I wouldn't run without one as road grime and crap can ruin the U/J,which is a bigger job.Why take the risk for such a small cost?

Also and of course the good old,"Shoe Goo",

Are there any differences between the CX and the GL boot/gaiter? Those don't all look identical; made me curious.

Thanks. Not something I had considered but that makes perfect sense. Trouble is I am having trouble sourcing one. Are you aware of anywhere that sells these?
