Not trying to abuse the knowledge base here but...

The bike I've been thinking of looking at is wrecked in the front; rear ended a car. Appears all the damage is in the front wheel/forks/triple tree/etc. Are all models compatible in this area so this would be a straight swap? If not what model will work for a '78 CX500? And this as easy at it would appear on the surface?

    Thanks again y'all.

Several models should work virtually plug and play. Good excuse to upgrade! What's your vision, stock, thicker stems, dual disc, cafe, bobber....?

If it were me I'd search out a donor Honda (cbr, magna, gl, etc and go from there.

In answer to the ease, well, depends on the new parts.

I'm looking at a '78 that was wrecked and the front messed up. I have a couple parts bikes (Custom and Deluxe) with good front ends. Just want to swap out. Looks straight forward but was wondering if there were any unforeseen difficulties or incompatibilities. Thanks

I would be wary and if you do purchase have the frame checked.Once a bike has been in an accident there may be hidden damage.

    My 2 cents.

Yeah, I'll agree. Hadn't thought about that.

I realize the frame is a main concern. That's one reason I want to make sure all else is okay and an easy fix. And most importantly is that I can get a great deal so worst case I can get my money out on easy parts (ie CDI, 18" wheel, seat, etc.)

If the front end swap is easy I can try that and get an idea of what's up. Maybe I'll end up with another bunch of parts (some of which I need.) And just maybe I'll get lucky and have a nice Standard.

I'm just trying to be realistic about the odds, the work and my offer.

    Thanks

I'd say new bearings and pretty straight swap. Might need some pressing, but that's cheap enough even if you have it done.

all the78 79 80 cx front ends swap around easy as pie you can even just use the fork tubes if the triple trees are good

if you do a complete swap if the races are good you can even reuse the ball bearings if they are in good shape

but a all balls kit is best

There's plenty of info around on how to check the frame

and if you do it in front of the seller you may have a bargaining chip.As I think you know the 18" rear wheel is a sort after commodity over there in the US as are many of the parts

Thanks Shep. I was aware of the string test but I'll have to watch the videos so I can get an idea of what to look for.
