    Hi all,

This is my first post, unfortunately it's a negative one.

    I have a 1980 cx500 E (84,000kms). It has been running fine, until today.

The engine has always had a ticking noise, that got louder today. The temperature also slowly crept up to a few mm above optimum (about the middle).

I also noticed power significantly decreased to the point where I pulled over and walked home.

It had oil, and water. Any ideas on what has happened?

I'm hoping like hell its not a big end or a 'about to seize', I drained the oil once I got it home on a trailer - nothing out of the ordinary.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Its possible you lost spark to one cylinder. This would account for the lack of power and also for the higher temp.

Put the oil back in, start it up, and pull one of the plug wires, then the other to see which one.

Thanks a lot, I'll give that a try.

Would running on one cylinder have caused damage?

Both cylinders had compression (hand over both pipes when running).

Running on 1 cylinder won't hurt anything.

If you mean exhaust pipes, thats not a 100% test because of the X box. You will get a pulse off each pipe when either cylinder fires.

A better test is to feel the pipes, or the cylinders to see if both get warm.

Use the search function as there are a couple of other NZ members who have become conversant with these motorcycles.

Also do you adjust your cam-chain regularly or is it the,"Automatic" type. Can you post a video or soundbite of the engine?

Put your model, year and location under your Avatar as it helps.

On the wire you pull, put a spark plug in it and ground it. Remember, the valve covers are not grounded. If you don't ground the wire there is a chance you can blow the electronics for that cylinder.

You might also want to replace your wires with solid copper core wires. The carbon wires care starting to break down internally on a lot of bikes due to age and being moved around through the years.

Now have it running on both cylinders.

However I changed oil and filter and found a few specks of what LOOKED like copper in the filter - Need to confirm that.

Started it up and it sounded fine? I'll get it checked properly tomorrow

Unsure, I haven't owned it long. I've done maybe 1000kms on it.

It has run fine in that time.

interesting, I would suggest running through the maintenance schedule in the FSM (get everything done and start the clock at 0) so you KNOW where the bike is in maintenance needs.
