    Left pot dies on me

My '84 GL650 has an odd problem after sitting for a month. Starts fine, idles fine, takes off fine. But after about 10 miles on the open road the left cylinder dies. There's been the odd jerk as she cuts in again, and one brief backfire. When she's cold, no problem at all till she warms up on the open road again. Changed the plugs. Runs beautifully till the left pot dies again. What's the most likely cause?

I would try changing my coil wires around, both primary and secondary circuits, and see if the right one fails instead.

Coils are like GL650 riders : if they overheat they go hay wire. They usually stay cool and collected. I HOPE the coil is the only culprit, and a new pair easy to get hold of. I suppose a 650 also have an air dam to keep the heat from the engine off the ignition coils ?

i would check the pulse generator plug is tight and do a resistance test of the pulse coils both cold and hot when the problem is evident

you have a 4 pin connection made up of yellow and yellow with a white marker and blue and blue with a white marker

none of the 4 should have continuity to ground

yellow to yellow should read 530 plus or minus 60 ohms

blue to blue 530 plus or minus 60 ohms

check all grounds and i would swap the igniter plugs from one side to the other and see if the problem follows the swap

i would also do a resistance test on the coils them selves as per the fsm

something either coil igniter or pulse gen or power supply is dropping out

FWIW, I've seen a bad spark plug cap cause this problem.

    Hi Murrayf
I've made a little progress. Transposed the ignition coils, spark plugs, ht leads and long plastic caps. Still the left hand cylinder dies after 5km.

After about half an hour perfect running resumes.

The spark units are identical, right? So can be transposed?

You refer to the pulse generator plug. Is that the block connector on the mudguard under the seat?

Because the fault occurs within a few minutes in cool weather it seems unlikely that the problem is due to heat. Agreed?

Test the pulse coils like Murray said. test them cold and then warm the bike until it starts to play up and retest immediately before anything cools. I've seen these stop sending a signal within minutes of starting like your bike. These will be the wires coming from the ignition cover at the rear of the motor in two pairs.

From memory they should be 535 ohms, give or take about 30.

checking the pulse coil is easy

the 4 wires are in pairs yellow and yellow with white trace

blue and blue with white trace

530 ohms plus or minus 60 ohms between each colored pair

no continuity on any of the wires to ground

check for 12v at both coils

    swap coils side to side

    swap igniters side to side

do each thing one at at time
