Anyone have a used ignition switch for a 83 GL650? How about a new one? I really only need the base contact but I'll take the whole assy. Can I use one off a GL500?

This is a tough one. The GL650 ignition switch is unique and no longer available. There are some online European parts sources that list a new GL650 switch, but the same part is also specified for GL500's. They are not the same.

It is possible to splice in a GL500 switch but it is not a simple plug-in operation. The GL500 switch is a little shorter, so it will be recessed slightly where the key inserts and will look a little odd. The GL500 contact base will not fit a GL650 switch.

If the problem is just the switch base cover, Honda part number 35102-431-007 can be trimmed to fit as shown below. A Dremel tool works well. The open areas can be sealed with Gorilla tape or similar.

In these first two photos, the new base cover is on the left.

You really should have this in the for sale buying area...

The Selling and Buying section would have been the appropriate place for the original post, and there is no need to duplicate posts in multiple sections. This forum is not that big - we would have found it.

But GL650 ignition switch availability is a problem, and a thread here would be appropriate for discussing potential solutions.

Hopefully others will jump in with suggestions.

Damn Dave.

You just saved me a world of trouble. The switch bottom for my cx650 is broke and I didn't even know the part was available. That's a real time saver with a dremel.

I realized after I posted it that it would been better to have it on the for sale_buying area - sorry about that.

Thanks Dave F your solutions are helpful. Part of my problem is a chewed up base cover from being taken off too many times. The other problem is the only one of the outside contacts had a spring the other was missing. I used two springs from clicker pens (took some time to find the right ones that would fit) and trimmed them down some to a good height and used them on the two outside contacts. The inner contact that sildes onto the center pin has two spring pockets under it; mine did not have springs, should it? Couldn't find springs to fit the smaller holes so I made some form the pen springs by winding them to a smaller dia with needle nose pliers.

All this atarted with my tailight(running light)not working - I chased it down to the ignition switch. My tailight now works but after a short ride my headlight, park light/blinkers, and horn are not working. There is power at the fuses but no power going to the left handlebar switch assy which powers the headlight and blinkers. The ignition switch has power at all the proper wires in the on position. I'm at a loss on where to look; does anyone have any ideas. I'm thinking there may be a shadetree splice in the harness that came lose.

Yes. Great idea on using the pen springs. Hopefully you will soon find a switch that can at least provide some parts.

Regarding the other problem, corrosion on cable connector contacts is a very common problem. Time spent cleaning them is well worth it.

If that doesn't correct it, it's time to use the multimeter to isolate the problem. If you don't already have one, the factory service manual contains a wiring diagram.

I don't know if this helps. I had a switch go bad on my '83 cx650c. The metal sliders on top of the springs eroded the plastic slots to the point where they could not be rebuilt or fixed. I started searching EBay to see if I could find switches that looked similar and then found the bikes they were listed for. Then I found maintenance drawings through google to check dimensions and pin-outs. I found an OEM replacement from EMGO listed for an old Saber and Cl750 (I think) that was a perfect fit for my CX, except that I lost the "Parking light." Other than that it was plug and go. I listed it on the old forum somewhere and will attempt to find it.

The whole process took me about a day to find a proper replacement on EBay. I'm not sure if the GL uses the same switch, but I would not be surprised if it wasn't used on several other bikes also.

All electrical on my GL650 is now working. It turned out to be one of the two the connectors behind the headlight bucket was not completly clicked in - it worked it's way apart probably when I turned the steering. Those connectors are covered with rubber so I couldn't see it. Hindsights 20-20 but I spent way too much time looking for the problem in the headlight bucket. I did use a multimeter and the Honda service manual schematic.

Now I can sleep well tonight.

My ignition switch is OK for now but it sure would be nice to be able to get an new aftermarket one.
