    I do them with the motor out. It's not an issue. You do need to restrain the motor from turning though.

    Thanks cxphreak, any pointers here? with this, am I listening for where air exactly is leaking from (exhaust, intake, etc) or is it simply to confirm that a given cylinder. is not sealing well enough.

    You do need a leak down tester, not a compression tester. With the motor out you will need to keep the crankshaft from turning;socket wrench on the bolt at the front of the crankshaft. Yes, listen for where the air is escaping;exhaust, intake, crankcase.

    I actually use a mechanics stethoscope to check the valves for leakage when leakdown testing. I take the probe end off of it and just use the ear pieces and hose. But .... a piece of fuel line in the port held near your ear works nearly as well. Don't point the fuel line directly into your ear. If you apply the pressure to the cylinder and a valve is leaking badly the consequences could be very bad for your ear.
