GL filter won't go in backwards. The snorkel has to go inside the opening or it won't go in.

    Thanks Bob .

    Did you;;

wipe the inside with a rag or paper towels ?

open anything else,or do cleaning or

service, put a rag or other item

    to keep anything

from getting into air box,,,,,,,carbs ?

remove the metal screen clean & re-install ?

Have you tried without any air filter ?

leave the airbox open and something

    crawl in ?

Did PO re-jet with a restricted air cleaner

    in the box ?

All the ??? may sound silly but strange

    and un-explained phenomena happen

I have a mysterious invisible force that

when "nobody" did it gets the blame.

"The Amarillo Phantom" he arrived about

the time I got together with my wife.

When my daughter came to live with

    me he became even mischievous.

Here are a couple pictures of what I had installed. Im afraid i threw out the old filter. i can't seem to find it. I will clean the screen. There was not much time between the old filter and the new where the air box was open. i am thinking no more than a minute or two.

Again, I am not against a carb cleaning and syncing. As I mentioned, I inherited this bike. I know it sat for a few years before i acquired it, and I am the third generation to enjoy it. I don't think my dad ever cleaned the carbs.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

I have used Emgo filters in the past and they were always OK. Yours looks perfectly normal.

One more thought: How old is the gas in the tank? I'm thinking that if you left the tank full (or worse partly full) of untreated gas and your first ride of this year was with the new filter the gas may have gone off over the winter...

Hi , as Bob said check for stale Gas and a plugged screen in the tank,oh did you turn the fuel on? Had the right float stick shut often with a dirty fuel tank, part of my annual service is drain fuel and clean tank and remove any water out of it. Tell us what you find okay

Also, as a guy who just checked his filter...double check the wiring to your coils that have bullet connectors right beside the filter snorkel. Maybe it's as simple as "whoops, I knocked that loose".

My GL500 is the first 30 yo bike I've owned but , bear with me, when I replaced the tires the temp gauge went wonky (along with a new fork seal leak). I didn't care 'cause it read low but when I pulled the seat to reupholster it after finding 6 hours of riding hurt like heck and put it back it was fine.I figure it was just a bump to a wire, doesn't make a lot of sense but I just can't thing of anything else.
Yank the tank and clean all the connections?

I would have no time to ride if I had to do all the routine maintenance and cosmetics suggested, I chose riding (within my reasoning).

If you think a GL500 seat hurt you should try a GL1000 seat.... They were the inspiration for naming the pain "Honda butt"

I don't want to hijack the thread so I just say the carving and restuff worked fair. I could have sculpted it a bit differently. It's probably less the seat that the 30 lbs I lost during cancer treatment. I have no butt left.
What happened with the high end thing? I can't see a filter change being a cause, just a symptom of something else.

Hi Adoom. Can you expand on "check the wiring coils...." I am not familiar with what those are. Still a new GL500 owner, so servicing this bike is still pretty new.
