    Mech Seal Leak

Hey all I have some antifreeze leaking out the weep hole. Looks like my Mech seal is busted. or that is what I've read on the forum. My question is, Can I make it the summer with out changing it? I'm going to do a triple bypass on it this coming winter and didn't really want to sacrifice some summer riding time. But at the same time I don't want to blow the engine in the summer heat either. Let me know what you all think.

    is this the 82?
How long has the bike sat not running?

If your lucky it may reseal on its own after some riding
If not look up the shep method. engine in frame fix

edit watch oil for any signs of coolant contamination

Lets hope for the reseal but i doubt it will happen. turned bike over about a week ago and started riding. I'm about to change the oil this week so i'll look and see if any freez is in it. fingers crossed. but yes it's for the 82. how easy is the Sheps's method. from where i see the Mech seal is placed is seems like i would have to drop everything else out just to get to the bolts.

I have not done the Shep method yet, but seems like once the tank and carbs are off you should be able to get at the water pump.
is it a drip or a gusher?

more of a drip. its sat with it all winter and I still have antifreeze I can just always see the top of my engine wet. i'll have to search around for the Shep method. I just went in on Larry's carb book so might be a good time to do it all. would you or someone else know what type of seal i should get? Thanks for the reply. i'm super excited to finally get this bike in running condition.

As stated in earlier, similar threads - I successfully Shepped my bike, and if I can do it, anybody can. I used the Yamaha part and sizzled it off with one of those mini-butane torches. I more recently rediscovered our old heat gun for paint stripping and wonder if it would work better.

My biggest problem was the fact that they renamed all of the goopy products in the auto parts store so I couldn't figure out which one to use. I think I documented it in an old thread.

The other thing that folks seem to have trouble with is noting which parts go where, and not accidentally throwing out necessary washers. It's not rocket science, but I guess folks screw it up because it's so messy in there that you want to clean everything.

And get a new copper crush washer for the impeller while you're ordering parts. A 127 x 3 mm O ring will replace the coolant pump cover O ring. It doesn't need to be preshaped like the Honda part, the cover groove will hold it in place.

FYI......If it's just "seeping" you should be ok for awhile.
My 1979 CX500 Deluxe had a very minor leak for 2yrs before i finally did the triple bypass.
As others have stated, check your coolant levels at the radiator AND for any coolant in the oil
