I am the orig owner and have never removed the engine.

I wanted to remove the engine last night but noticed that the spines on shaft drive were covered with dirt/light rust. I soaked it with some penatrating oil overnight.

Today I first had to remove the last three bolts at the rear of the engine to frame. I soaked all three the night before with oil. I finally got the long lower one out. Now the two upper bolts--one came out OK. The other was frozen. I soaked the nut for about an hour and used my air gun with light pressure (did not want to break the bolt)---it was a no go. I then proceeded to heat the area above that bolt and tried again--it gave a little. I then repeated the process again and bolt came out--It was covered in rust.I will have to go buy some new ones--just will feel better.

Now when I was backing engine out, it was ok and but I saw the shaft was coming with it. I stopped and tried to shake the engine and finally it was disconnected. However, shaft was about 3-4 inches out from normal. I then just shoved the it back in the gear drive and turned the rear wheel and I could see the shaft turning.

    MY QUESTION:

AM I ok by just pushing it back in????

    Thanks

I THINK you will be fine but lets wait and hear from the experts.

My drive shaft pulled a little forward - maybe 1 inch - and I pushed it back with no repercussions.

Danny,as Tony correctly said.the way the shaft is constructed, you can safely slide it back and forth so,slide it back in

Yeah getting it out is the easy part. Wait 'til you put it back in... Helps if you have friends around and a good lift. The beneficial part of the shaft moving fore and aft is that you can slide it on before the motor is completely re-mounted. Just make sure that it is still engaged at the rear when you get it lined up.

Again, thanks to all. That does make me feel better.

Yea, I can not wait to try and get it to line up when re-installing. However, 1st thing to do the triple by pass. I will build a make shift table and lift the engine up at eye level---I have a break down engine hoist. My back already hurts from yesterday.

I will be asking for more help in a separate thread--again I am not in a hurry. I always seem to forget something. Been reading alot and making notes and going ot take pics.

Most parts s/b here by Friday and am sending stator out to Custom.

I have noticed that every year gremlins add a few pounds to the things I THINK I should be able to pick up.

That engine is kind of heavy when your old and fat and proud of it (like me!)!

When I did my triple bypass I used a Black and Decker work mate as my table. It wasn't big enough to adequately lay out all the parts - as I removed them - but I had a huge box (2 of them actually) and I bagged and labled all the parts I took off...and took lots of pics which I shared on the forum. Go to your local flourist and ask for their "coffin boxes"...this are the boxes their flowers get deliverd in. They are long and about 1 foot to 18 inches wide. It was a good idea to lay the parts out in the order I took them off the bike. I was worried if I didn't have a system like this I would neglect putting an important part back on in order...only to find out too late? Fortunately that didn't happen.

It was great to have support and feedback from all the forum members as I'm not a mechanic - pictures speak a thousand words. Learn how to post pics. You'll get a much quicker response if you post pics. Do this and all the forum members will certainly chime in with their experience.

    Good luck!

Thanks, Johnny, I think I have most of your thread from your. I set up to saw horse with two 10x 12 on top. I have plenty of storage container and am taking pictures. I will post a new thread in a day to two. Right now, I have another thread re not being able to shift thru the gears.
