Looking for a Seattle area CX buddy to compare bikes

    Howdy all:

I just picked up a highly customized CX and would like to put back on some of the "unnecessary" stuff the original builder took off (e.g. horn, turn indicators, temperature gauge, neutral indicator, etc). I'd also like to get a sense of how different its suspension and other features are from stock. The best way for me to do that would be to hang out with someone who as a stock (1980) CX and pick their brain, ogle their wiring harness, measure the clearance between the rear wheel and fender, etc.

Any Seattle area CX'rs interested in getting together?

Just being able to look at another CX and talk with someone about their experiences with it would be a huge help.

I've been riding an almost-stock '82 Custom for a year around town now. Don't know how helpful it would be but I'm happy to get together. PM me and we can try to find a time that works.

    Cheers.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'll look around for some place that wouldn't object to a few bikes hanging out (Dick's in Ballard)? and see about scheduling an informal "mini-meet". I'll follow up with folks directly to see there is a time/day that would be best. Having a chance to see how far my CX was taking from stock will really me better understand troubleshooting advice that assumes all/most/some of the original bits are still there.
1980 CX500C with a TI ignition, bobbed and fitted with bits of other vintage bikes.
    To do:
    • Wire back in all the "unnecessary" stuff the PO removed: Kill switch, high beam indicator, rear brake light switch, turn indicators.
    • Replace rear shocks.
    • Replace mechanical seal?
    • Dual caliper brake replacement.
    • Resolve rear tire rubbing fender (diet time for me).
    • Resolve charging issue (bad stator?) <--- Maybe not. The voltage meter reads 12.7 - 13.9v while running (12.4 at idle).
    • Replace rear lights (with something more visible).
    • Make "Heartache" engine plaques.

No doubt that knowledgeable folks, such as yourself, would make quick work of noting changes from just pictures and that would be a great help. I've already learned a lot from just reading old posts in which people offered guidance based off of photos. However, my (selfish) goal is to get a good understanding of how these systems work together and with my learning style being able to observe a known good sample is really helpful to internalize knowledge and interpolate details.

I also want to avoid asking questions that have come up before. If only I just knew what I was looking for I'd be better able to find those questions that have already been answered. I know I've got plenty of stupid questions so anything I can do to reduce the frequency with which I ask them, the better.

I have purchased a GL500 with a reported frozen engine. Following advise i have freed-up the engine and gotten the transmission to shift. The real problem was the rear breaks had seized. While waiting for new break shoes I am moving ahead with getting it running. It had been sitting for 6 years outside and has about a half full tank of fluid which I intend to drain. Can you suggest other steps I should take?

Well after sitting for 6 years you will need to drain and clean the tank and clean the carbs. Get a new Battery, Filters, Plugs, Oil, and tires.
You can see the state of your Stator with a multi meter. And inspect your timing chain with a dental mirror.
