Here's what I'm thinking: The circuit is basically 2 spark plugs in series between the ends of the coil with the ground connection between the plugs. Grounding one of the leads turns it into basically the same circuit as a single lead coil - one end of the coil connected to the tip of the plug and the other to the side of the plug through ground.

What I am concerned about is that the single plug will have twice the voltage across its gap as there would be across each of the 2 plugs. Would that just make a better spark or would it harm the plug or the coil?

You are talking about the resistance of the primary winding that is connected to the igniter. I'm talking about the secondary winding that the plug(s) are connected to. Tangerines & oranges.

BTW: GL1500 coils are 3 ohm primary and are readily available. I have them on my GoldWing...

There you go. All I did was search for GL650 coil. Correct me if I am wrong but I'm pretty sure the ignition systems of the 500 and 650 are identical.

Your '79 is CDI. Are you using those on a bike with TI? There are lots that work with CDI but we're talking about TI here.
