Backfires can be caused by an exhaust leak?

Also Air-cut off valves in the carbs.

Ok, it is a little hard starting. Hesitates and sputters a little below 3k. I am running premium and some seafoam in the tank this round to see if anything improves. I will check for exhaust leaks and inspect the air cutoff valves. Thanks for sticking with me Shep.

No problem.I like people to get their bikes as good and smooth as mine are just so they can appreciate how good they can be :)

I've just finished some more info that may help,

Well, make take a lot of guessing, but so far the people here have a really high success rate :)

Does it backfire when idling, or only when letting off the throttle ? If you have an exhaust leak it can cause this sort of problem.

Hmm I seem to have the same "turbo" feeling after 7k, thought it was supposed to be that way. So I should look at the carb pistons huh?

Hmmm, mine comes on the greased lightning at 7000RPM too. I have'nt located the turbo yet though. wonder if there are any aftermarket turbo's available for the 500. Happy riding, dinowilliesII

update, I have replaced the right coil, and the battery. I cleaned out the carbs, removed the jets, blown out the carbs with cleaner and air, and tuned and synced the carbs. It runs better, but it started puttering and backfiring a little bit....need a pro on this one please.

I can't claim to be a pro, but it sounds like the valve timing is off. Can't figger out how, though, unless somebody replaced the chain and got it a tooth off.
Of course it wouldn't correct itself, either.
More thought needed, as soon as brain cells are available. I'm in the middle of a CX500 turbo "refresh".

ok, so I removed the coils, sanded the ground contacts with 400, sanded the mounting brackets, sanded the bolts and nuts, sanded the frame where the bracket mounts, and put everything back together. I used blue locktite on the nuts. I took the bike for a ride and it ran great, then once fully warmed up it started to hesitate around 3k until 5k or 6k. Then, again the "turbo" kicks in. Although not as dramatic this time. I took it downtown to fill up the tank, after filling up it would not start. I cranked it and gave it a little throttle and then POW, it backfired. I gave it about 40% choke and it started right up. Once home i noticed that at idle it stumbles a little. So, i pulled the left spark plug wire and the stumble disappeared. I then plugged it back in and there the stumble was again. I pulled the right spark plug wire and the bike dies....So, logically that would tell me that the left cylinder is stumbling. Everything checks out on the cdi and the resistor caps have been rebuilt, new spark plugs....I have switched the coils and the problem persists. Any ideas anyone? I am stumped!

Could this be the low speed pulsar on the left side? A link to check this out would be awesome! :D

Yikes ! Primary ignition>? You may need a donor engine for parts. I think the Honda manual may have tests to follow. At least you can say that you are a carb-vet. I was wondering how the transition from lo to hi speed timing occured. It does occur HOT only? so perhaps a primary coil or pick-up shorts when hot.
